From Victim to Survivor... to Active Citizen Our Theory of Change: Women for Women International believes that when women are well, sustain an income, are decision-makers, and have strong social networks and safety-nets, they are in a much stronger position to advocate for their rights. This philosophy and our commitment to local leadership builds change and capacity at the grassroots level.
The Princess Diana Memorial Fund
I personally believe that Princess Diana was a true Angel here on Earth. Her influence was and still is worldwide. During her time on earth she showed us what true compassion was. Her groundbreaking work at the beginning of the AIDS crisis to the work of abolishing land mines have helped change peoples lives for the better.
Even though she is not with us on earth her spirit is and the work that she began continues through this beautiful foundation.
This is from their website:
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund is an independent grant-giving charity established in September 1997 to continue the Princess's humanitarian work in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Red Cross
Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the
American Red Cross has been the nation's premier emergency response
organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral
humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross
distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural
disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services,
always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering.
Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: community services that help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products; educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.

Habitat for Humanity
I have supported and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. This organization fills a great need for people to find housing when they are on their last legs.
If you give $ or volunteer to help build a Habitat house, this is an amazing way to give shelter to those families that need a roof over their heads.
From their Site:
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Project Angel Food
I began volunteering at Project Angel Food soon after the AIDS crisis hit in Los Angels in 1989. I was led there by one of my very first metaphysical teachers and founder of Project Angel Food, Marianne Williamson.
It has endured the test of time and Mariannes vision of feeding those with HIV/AIDS, Cancer and life threatening illness has endured the test of time. They are truly Angels and I am honored to include Project Angel Food here.
From their Site:
Project Angel Food's mission is to nourish the body and spirit of men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. Volunteers and staff cook and deliver free and nutritious meals prepared with love throughout Los Angeles County, acting out of a sense of urgency because hunger and illness do not wait.

Kiva
Kiva is one of my favorite organizations because their whole mission is to start from where people are in order to empower them out of poverty, by giving micro-loans for small businesses. The miro-loan model is such an amazing way to give a gift that keeps giving over and over. Once your initial loan amount is paid off, Kiva will notify you that that money is now available to be loaned to another deserving person. The same money that I raised more than 4 years ago has helped more than 40 people start or maintain a small business. Love that!

Random Acts of Flowers
My friend Sage Morgan runs this beautiful service that helps bring light and hope to those in hospitals by delivering them the gift of beauty in the form of flowers. I have loved the work that they do since they began a few years ago.

Natural Resources Defense Council
This is an organization that does amazing work for animals and our planet. I have been a member of NRDC for more than 20 years and I am proud to have been a part of major legislation changes that have saved animals and their habitats.
From their Site:
The Natural Resources Defense Council works to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth.
The Natural Resources Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends.
We work to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places
We seek to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. NRDC affirms the integral place of human beings in the environment.
We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations.
We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. We seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. Ultimately, NRDC strives to help create a new way of life for humankind, one that can be sustained indefinitely without fouling or depleting the resources that support all life on Earth.
AMFAR
I remember when the AIDS Crisis struck and I was a teenager in Los Angeles. It was a devastating and scary time for many especially within the arts community. Besides working and volunteering for organizations like The Los Angeles Crenter for Living and Project Angelfood, I also volunteered for AMFAR when they would have annual benefits at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. I had the thrill of seeing both Sharon Stone and the legendary Elizabeth Taylor at one benefit and I will never forget that. AMFAR has been on my list of amazing organizations forever.
